Translation Notes

Prologue

Hachiko
ハチ公 - Hachikō: a famous Akita dog that waited every day for over nine years at Shibuya station for the return of his owner, who had died and never returned to meet Hachikō. In April 1934, a bronze statue in Hachikō's likeness was erected at Shibuya Station, which is what Mai refers to.

Dogenzaka
道玄坂 - Dōgenzaka: a road in central Shibuya (a famous shopping district in Tokyo) near Shibuya Station

Fluffy
The actual text says タマ (Tama), which is a common name for cats in Japan. It literally means "ball", so I went with a cat name that seemed suitable.

Second Year
高校二年生 - koukou ninensei: this is literally "high school second year student." In Japan, elementary school is 6 years, middle school is 3 years, and high school is 3 years, so this would be the 11th grade. School is only compulsory until the end of middle school, i.e., the end of 9th grade.
